Damascus: A Durable Form of Steel

Damascus Steel is named after Damascus, the capital city of Syria in the ancient world. This could be referred as the swords made in Damascus, or it just may refer to the different patterns by comparing them to Damask fabric, which is named after Damascus as well.

This is where they forged the blades of swords in the Near East from ingots of wootz steel from Sri Lanka and India. These swords are, in a sense, of combining various patterns of banding and molting reminiscent of flowing water. These blades were found to be tough, shatter resistant, and known to hone and retain a very sharp edge.

Today, the method of producing wootz steel, is still not entirely known. Modern methods have not been so successful as far as raw materials and manufacturing techniques. Here are some examples of techniques and types of Damascus Steel:

Several people in modern times have claimed that they have rediscovered the method of producing Damascus steel.

Damascus Steel has been known in many legends, to cut through rifle barrels and precisely cut hair & split hair. Many types of Damascus steel out perform ancient Damascus alloys, the chemical reaction in the production process, made the blades extraordinary. This Damascus steel was found to be very hard, straight and most. Durable at the same time, in which to prove that this Steel has been proved to be very straight and very durable. So we have learned that carbon steel, in my opinion, has been proved as one of the all time “BEST STEELS” as far as making any Damascus knives carbonizing additives with certain types of iron rich in micro alloying elements. These ingots will be forged and worked into Damascus steel blades. Damascus steel knives and swords are widely used today, and collected by many folks all over the world. It can be just a little more expensive, as a result of this difficult process. Don’t forget to leave me a comment.
